Scout — The Official Haystead Science Ambassador
Scout, our German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP), serves as the official Science Ambassador of Haystead Ranch. Her name was chosen very intentionally. In exploration, discovery, and field science, a scout is the one who goes ahead—curious, observant, and always searching for what lies just beyond the next hill.
That spirit perfectly reflects both Scout’s personality and the mission of the Haystead.
German Shorthaired Pointers are natural explorers. Bred for intelligence, endurance, and curiosity, they excel at investigating their environment and working alongside people in the field. Those same traits make Scout an ideal companion for a place dedicated to hands-on science, discovery, farming, livestock husbandry and education.
Scout is also a titled and widely recognized therapy dog through the American Kennel Club, reflecting her exceptional training, temperament, and ability to work comfortably with the public. As a fully trained and working therapy dog, Scout has demonstrated the calm behavior, reliability, and gentle nature required to interact safely and positively with people of all ages.
Her role extends beyond the ranch. As a certified outreach and therapy dog, Scout helps connect people—especially young students—to the excitement of science. Whether visiting educational programs, greeting families at science centers such as the Richmond Planetarium & Science Center, or accompanying field research activities, Scout reminds everyone that curiosity is the first step in discovery.
Children often approach science with the same enthusiasm Scout shows when exploring a new trail. When students meet Scout, the experience breaks down barriers, making science feel welcoming, fun, and accessible.
At Haystead Ranch, we believe science should be explored, experienced, and shared. Scout embodies that philosophy. She represents curiosity, friendship, and the joy of learning.
In many ways, she truly is our best explorer.

The Haystead Ranch Adventure Dog
AKC Therapy Dog • Expedition Companion • Science Ambassador
There are explorers who study the world through telescopes and microscopes… and then there are those who experience it nose-first.
At the Haystead Research Ranch, few members of the expedition team have traveled as widely, comforted as many people, or attended as many scientific adventures as Scout Machete Hay — the ranch’s official Adventure Dog and fully titled AKC Therapy Dog.
From quiet therapy visits and historical encampments to mountain-top campsites, research vessels, and observatory domes beneath the stars, Scout approaches every mission with curiosity, loyalty, and an unwavering belief that every new place contains a friend waiting to be met.
❤️ Scientist. Comforter. Explorer.
Scout divides her time between two very important careers.
As a certified therapy dog, she brings calm companionship and joy to nursing homes, hospitals, educational programs, and community events across the region.
As Haystead’s expedition companion, she participates in ranch projects ranging from historical living demonstrations as the team’s trusted “War Hound” to astronomy deployments, field research outings aboard the Defiant, and remote overnight camps.
Her favorite assignment, however, remains clear.
The moment the doors open at the Richmond Science Museum, especially beneath the great curve of the planetarium dome, Scout knows she has arrived exactly where she belongs.
