🌱 Laura’s Garden — Spring Rebuild (HRP-2026-021-WP)
April 18, 2026 — Full spring reset initiated on the 50×50 enclosed high-fertility zone at Haystead Ranch. Operations include removal and decommissioning of aging shelters and tractors, perimeter fence and gate repairs, and complete mowing/clearing to restore full working capacity. Following site prep, Dr. Laura began the soil-conditioning program with broadcast seeding of winter rye and white clover to enhance soil structure, nitrogen fixation, moisture retention, and erosion control.
This phase transitions Laura’s Garden into a dual-purpose system—serving both as an active grow space and a secure, nutrient-rich brooder zone for incoming chicks and juvenile turkeys expected late April through early May. Ongoing monitoring will focus on germination success, ground cover establishment, and enclosure integrity to ensure optimal readiness for livestock integration and continued regenerative use.

🌿 Haystead Expedition: Turtle Census Field Operation (2026)
🌿 Haystead Expedition: Turtle Census Field Operation (2026)
In June 2026, the Haystead Research Ranch team will deploy on its first major field expedition with the Virginia Living Museum, supporting an ongoing freshwater turtle population study in Newport News.
Operating from mobile base the Defiant at Newport News Park, the team will integrate directly into a long-term ecological monitoring program focused on tracking species distribution, growth rates, and the impact of non-native turtle introductions.
The expedition will culminate in a live turtle census operation at Deer Park Lake, where researchers and volunteers will process captured turtles using established scientific protocols. Each animal will be identified, measured, assessed for health, and either cataloged as a new specimen or tracked as part of an ongoing recapture dataset.
This work will contribute to a broader understanding of ecosystem health and will highlight the consequences of human actions—particularly the release of pet species into native habitats.
For Haystead, this expedition will represent a foundational step in expanding field-based research, combining education, conservation, and hands-on science into a single operational mission. Launch / Operational Plan

HAG-02 Viking Herb Garden Restoration
HAG-02 Viking Herb Garden Restoration
Agricultural Renewal Initiative — Field Activation Weekend
This weekend at Haystead Research Ranch, we officially activate HAG-02 — Viking Herb Garden Restoration & Growing Season Preparation, continuing our Agricultural Renewal Initiative and seasonal readiness operations.
Over the course of March 7th and 8th, David, Dr. Laura, and Scout will be onsite restoring, expanding, and preparing the Viking Herb Garden for the 2026 growing season. This work blends historical agricultural principles with modern soil science and environmental monitoring — a hallmark of Haystead field operations.
🔬 Mission Objectives for the Weekend
Soil assessment and organic amendment integration
Raised bed restoration and structural reinforcement
Cold-tolerant herb planting and early-season starts
Irrigation system inspection and calibration
Data logging of soil temperature, moisture, and atmospheric conditions
Integration with Haystead Environmental Intelligence Center monitoring
🌱 Why It Matters
The Viking Herb Garden is more than a planting space — it’s a living research platform. By combining regenerative soil practices with real-time environmental monitoring, we continue building resilient food systems adapted to local climate realities.
This weekend marks the transition from winter dormancy to active cultivation. Data collected during this activation phase will inform seasonal forecasting models and guide planting strategy throughout spring.
🐾 Field Notes
Scout will, of course, be supervising perimeter security and morale operations.
Bio-Dome spring Start up
🌱 Haystead Bio-Dome — Bio-Beds Spring Preparation Weekend
Project Overview
The Haystead Bio-Dome Bio-Beds Weekend marks the seasonal transition from winter dormancy to active spring biological production. Scheduled for March 1st, this operation focuses on rebuilding soil structure, restoring microbial activity, and preparing the biodome growing systems for high-yield cultivation.
Five cubic yards of mulch, combined with accumulated onsite winter compost and integrated animal contributions, will be incorporated into the growing beds to create a biologically active and moisture-stable substrate.
The objective is to establish a living soil ecosystem capable of sustained nutrient cycling throughout the growing season.
Go to our projects page for more information.
HRR-2026-004-AGRI — Field 1 Upgrade
HRR-2026-004-AGRI — Field 1 Upgrade
🔬 Project Overview
Haystead Ranch has completed a major upgrade to Field 1, transforming it into a fully expanded and structured grazing system designed to support summer livestock operations.
The field has been more than doubled in size, outfitted with new permanent fencing, and includes a 10-foot heavy-duty access gate. A run-in shelter system has been ordered and will be installed upon arrival.
This field will serve as the primary summer grazing area for a flock of 30+ sheep.
🧪 Research & Development Goals
Field 1 will function as a live test environment to evaluate:

Vermiculture Tower Build
This weekend the Haystead team will construct and activate the Biodome Worm Tower Breeding System, a key component of the ranch’s regenerative soil program.
The vermiculture tower will allow us to cultivate healthy populations of composting worms that convert organic waste into nutrient-rich castings and living soil biology. These worms will support multiple Haystead projects including the Tower Garden, Bio Beds, Viking Garden, and biodome planting systems.
By establishing a stable worm breeding colony inside the biodome, we are building a self-sustaining soil ecosystem that improves plant health, accelerates composting, and strengthens the biological foundation of the entire ranch.
🪱 Project Focus: Worm Tower Construction & Colony Launch
🌱 Program: Biodome Biological Systems Initiative

🔭 HAYSTEAD MESSIER MARATHON MONDAY
🔭 HAYSTEAD MESSIER MARATHON MONDAY
Field Observatory Deployment – March 23rd
Location: The Hill – Haystead Research Ranch
Event Type: Astronomical Field Operations
Seasonal Window: Vernal Equinox Cycle
🌌 Event Overview
The Haystead Research Ranch will host its annual Messier Marathon Monday Field Deployment March 23rd.
During this single-night we will attempt to observe and log as many objects as possible from the Messier Catalog — a collection of 110 deep-sky targets including galaxies, nebulae, globular clusters, and open clusters.
This is a precision-timed observational event aligned with the optimal equinox window, when the geometry of the night sky allows nearly the entire Messier catalog to be visible over the course of one night.
🏕 Field Deployment Plan
A large dome tent portable observatory will be established on the Haystead Hill to provide:
Maximum open horizon view of the ecliptic
Minimal tree-line interference
Optimal southern and western sky exposure
Stable equipment platform for tracking systems
The site selection prioritizes low light pollution and uninterrupted sky arcs from dusk to dawn.
🔬 Equipment & Technical Operations
The following systems will be deployed:
Primary and secondary telescopes
Computerized equatorial tracking mounts
Digital star charts & target sequencing software
Imaging systems (weather permitting)
Real-time observation logging
Target acquisition will follow a structured progression:
Early western targets at dusk
Midnight meridian clusters
Pre-dawn eastern objects
Low-horizon final captures before sunrise
Efficiency, sequencing discipline, and atmospheric conditions will determine final object count.
🎯 Mission Objective
Attempt maximum Messier object capture within one astronomical night
Log confirmed visual observations
Record environmental conditions
Refine telescope alignment and rapid-target acquisition procedures
The marathon is both a challenge and a calibration exercise for Haystead’s observational astronomy capabilities.
🌠 Why It Matters
The Messier Marathon is more than a checklist — it is:
A seasonal sky reset
A systems integration test
A reminder of our place within the Milky Way
A live exercise in endurance, precision, and celestial navigation
From the hill at Haystead, beneath dark Virginia skies, the Ranch becomes a temporary deep-space command outpost.
